Why do I need an MBA in New York?

New York City is the banking, securities and stock brokerage capital of the nation. JP Morgan Chase, Citicorp, Lehmann Brothers, Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs are all based in New York and are all among the state’s top fifty employers. A New York MBA graduate who wants to break into the sale, brokerage or development of wealth accumulation products and services should head for Manhattan. The opportunities are as diverse as the services these firms offer; many of them are not only bankers and brokers but also in the insurance and annuities business as well.

Upstate New York is not without its iconic business institutions. IBM is based in Hopewell Junction, outside of Poughkeepsie. Kodak was founded and remains headquartered in Rochester. IBM is an interesting New York MBA opportunity, “Big Blue” has worked hard to change its business as their products of business have evolved. They recently sold their consumer computer division to a Chinese corporation and are concentrating on business equipment. IBM has had some success cracking the server market; the company seems like it has responded well to the market dynamics that have changed rapidly in the field of business-oriented electronic products.

Kodak, on the other hand, has done well in re-establishing itself as a reliable consumer brand. It has developed its own suite of digital camera products and has done a textbook job of leveraging the brand to sell the assortment of cameras and ancillary products they’ve developed. It is an energetic place for those considering MBA programs in New York.
